Regime change: If the essence of America resided in the office of the president, then,
yes, we'd be in trouble. But America is more ordinary, more normal and more
sensible than the Bush administration, according to new research
cited by Martin Kettle in today's Guardian.
In The Emerging Democratic Majority, John B Judis and Ruy Teixeira argue that,
despite appearances, the Republican's hold on power is weak. It's set to loosen fatally
as the Democrats gain support from the three groups currently growing as a proportion
of voters: professionals, women and minorities. [Guardian].
One particularly interesting point Judis and Teixeira make is that professionals are turning
Democrat because they want to focus on the quality of the service or ideas they
provide. They see corporations and large institutions as imposing 'alien
profit-and-loss standards onto their work. . . Once advocates of laissez-faire
capitalism, they have grown increasingly amenable to government regulation of
business.' [The
New Republic].
